Prismatic Vodka #66 Wednesday May 24th 2006 "Don't Look Down!" copyright 2005 Rik Davnall, all rights reserved Rik_the_Riff@hotmail.com - email me! Not much to say today, really. I'm quite happy with the way today's comic came out, but it's a bit lacklustre compared to 'Silent Fireworks' (that splash page from three weeks ago) or the dragon page. I'm having trouble getting motivated at the moment. I am medicating for this with inordinate quantities of biscuits. Custard creams... mmm... I have just watched the Jigoku Shojo finale. After seeing episode 24 last week, you might remember I was a little excited about this. Unfortunately, I have to say the ending is a little disappointing. It's interesting, certainly, and complicated and it really does make you care about what's going on (I'll admit to shouting at the screen several times, particularly during episode 26), but the hoped-for moral comeuppance just fails to materialise. Maybe that's the kind of thing that only bothers me, but a certain character (I can't say which, or I'll spoil it, which I don't want to do) really does get off wayyyyyy too lightly. Make sure you watch the bit after the end credits of episode 26 to see what I mean. I think my disappointment might be similar to the way I felt with Kenran Butoh Sai; both Kenran and JS are high-quality shows, but they happen to stand in the same genres as some of my favourite shows ever; Kenran disappointed because it failed to measure up to the standards of shows like RahXephon and Evangelion. Similarly, Jigoku Shojo fails to match Boogiepop Phantom and Paranoia Agent (shows which it seems to want to be ranked and categorised with) for tightness, and so comes across as a little too weak. It hasn't helped that the series as a whole is at least half filler. All that said, I did really enjoy episodes 25 and 26; the animation, as ever, was gorgeous, the characters were hypnotically compelling, the long-awaited revelations were powerful (particularly the one about Ai and Sentarou), and the moral ambiguity, if unresolved, did at least get you going. Not perfect, but not everything can be Paranoia Agent or RahXephon. I'm going to get in trouble for suggesting those two are perfect, aren't I... ^_^ That's it for now. Wub, Rik ![]() ![]()
